Apparently there aren’t good margins in the rooftop lettuce growing business – I’ve read a couple articles about this situation and there are some reports that over 3 million is owed to creditors.

The downtown Vancouver rooftop lettuce farm enthusiastically promoted by Mayor Gregor Robertson in November 2012 has wilted, leaving the city a potentially expensive clean-up.

Parent company Alterrus — which built an “innovative rooftop vertical farm” at a Richards Street parkade that was leased by the city — tried to sell greens to trendy restaurants under the Local Garden brand.

The two companies both went under and Local Gardens revenues were not keeping up with costs, a spokesperson for bankrutpcy trustee Bowra Group confirmed .
